Leonardo - Photo Editor with Layer, Selection and Mask Review
Release Date: August 1, 2013
Category: Photo & Video
Great app with a couple of things I'd like to see added.... (by Strizbiz on Fri, 21 Nov 2014 15:28:00)
As far as iOS photo editing apps go, this is one of the best I've seen and even rivals Photoshop touch in some areas, filled with plenty of features, I haven't spent a lot of time with it yet, but there are a couple of things I'd like to see addressed or added. As far as layers go, when adding an empty layer, I'd like to be able to do just that, not create a layer that , not a white layer or any other layer, just one that is blank so I can paint over an image and still have the paint on its own layer. Second, I'd like to see just a simple eraser in the panel next to the paint brush, that it (so far) I still give it 5 stars but would love those 2 things added.
Fantastic!!!! (by Rheadyn on Fri, 21 Nov 2014 07:15:00)
Thank you, the video tutorials were very helpful!!!
Best photoshop app for the iphone (by TooMuchTo on Tue, 18 Nov 2014 21:54:00)
PSD export, layers, blend modes, correction tools... etc. It's my go to app for corrections, adjustments, and compositing. Easily replacing 3 different apps that I used to use.
Great app (by Dat1kidchris on Sun, 16 Nov 2014 07:42:00)
Best mobile photoshop app.
Does what others won't. (by 0'Doyle on Sun, 16 Nov 2014 00:40:00)
Need to paint a mask? Oops—Pixelmator doesn't do masking (yet; I remain hopeful that the devs will realize how stupid this is). Need multiple layers? Oops—iColorama doesn't do that. Need a usable mobile UI? Oops—ArtStudio doesn't have that. And that, friends, is why Leonardo is still a big part of my workflow. It's not the most versatile; it's not the fanciest UI, or even the most streamlined for how I work—but it's got the *best* selection & masking tools around.
Beware (by Non-employee on Tue, 11 Nov 2014 17:11:00)
Buyer beware, I've read the tutorial, I know how it's supposed to work. It just doesn't. You might want to invest your money somewhere else.
I love this app (by Emagolema on Tue, 11 Nov 2014 10:10:00)
This is my favorite app of all apps!! I have tried so many other layer apps and nothing compares to this one. One thing I would love you to add is an opacity slider added to the mask brush so I can erase partially. I hope you can add this. Simply amazing app!!
Very cool (by kevinsuckafree on Sun, 09 Nov 2014 19:22:00)
It's a newer, dope editing app like photowizard by Pankaj Goswsmi! Like the photowizardapp before but w layers and much more! Awesome! Great reviews also!

Leonardo (by Yo / Good(Hungarian) on Sat, 08 Nov 2014 05:08:00)
I really like this program. It's perfect for the Ipad, and any small photo editing work. The tutorial videos is very helpful. Worth the money.
Leonardo (by Luci P on Fri, 07 Nov 2014 16:35:00)
I use this app to create superimposed pictures and to create new photos. It is easy to use and I would highly recommend it. I can blend many pictures together making just one creation. I love it!
Love love love (by BlueNosedFoot on Fri, 07 Nov 2014 12:52:00)
I absolutely adore this app! Easy to use & produces amazing results everytime I use it. I photoshop on it almost everyday! Please never get rid of this app.
No questions: the best money I have spent for a piece of software (by Alliteration Ace on Fri, 07 Nov 2014 01:55:00)
Leonardo is unbelievably powerful, fast and easy to use. It boasts a genius implementation of layers, masks, filters, texts, editing and selection tools. I get so much delight creating beautiful pieces of artwork from clippings using my fingers. Desktop applications are of course more powerful, but are blown away by Leonardo's fun factor, convenience and intuitive controls. It's a must buy for creative types!
Valuable App! (by Courtney Bri on Fri, 07 Nov 2014 00:24:00)
One of the most advanced photo editors available- it does many things that no one else does- selection tools are excellent and terrific layer support. Very sophisticated tools. An important app for any advanced photo manipulator.
Dom (by Captd..... on Thu, 06 Nov 2014 22:44:00)
Great editing app. Simple to use and does it all.
Truly an Accomplishment (by Non-employee Also on Sun, 16 Nov 2014 17:04:00)
This is not a simple photo app meant for everyone. If you use Photoshop, you'll be amazed at how well this app allows you to utilize layers to recreate the exact same dramatic effects and localized edits, especially considering it's $5. It's UI is definitely cumbersome, but that's unavoidable given the complexity of what it tries to accomplish. If you're serious about photo editing, this is the only app you'll need and the best I've used. If you're new to photo editing, buy this app, learn it well, then edit all your photos with it, even those you take on your camera. If you really read and learn about editing, you can get truly pro results with this $5 app.
Great app but... (by party0f3 on Mon, 03 Nov 2014 08:01:00)
This app does everything I need to do plus more. But every time I go to drop shadow, I hit apply and it closes me out of the app!
I love this , needs true high res. save (by ZAATARA on Fri, 31 Oct 2014 22:19:00)
Thank you, Pankaj Goswami !
Missing one thing! (by Ray96m on Sat, 11 Oct 2014 19:36:00)
Pen tool selection. Otherwise this is the best photo editing app in the App Store (used quite a few).
Thrilled (by XLR8NIL8 on Tue, 07 Oct 2014 14:48:00)
Superimpose, by the same maker as Leonardo, has always been my "go to" app, so I was thrilled to discover Leonardo. Just scratching the surface of this app and am already amazed at the wealth of features provided in a well laid out format for mobile platform. Looking forward to diving in deeper to discover all the great features Leonardo has to offer. Will definitely #leonardo tag my finished products on Instagram - thank you for creating this app! @raised_by_squirrels
Excellent for all photo editing needs! (by Shinook66 on Fri, 03 Oct 2014 14:26:00)
Since there's no iPhoto for ios8 I was looking for something comparable. Unfortunately there are too many superficial photo editing apps but barely any more detailed ones. This app does it all and even more. Not only has it all kinds of layers but also an editing brush and masking. I gladly spent 5 bucks on it and can recommend it to anyone who wants some more serious editing features.
Powerful App! (by Perry3D on Fri, 26 Sep 2014 05:51:00)
Love this app! Haven't found anything this app can't do.
Great App! Needs back feature! (by Luthraz on Thu, 18 Sep 2014 17:21:00)
I'd like the ability to save to and from iTunes as I have certain templates I use that take a while to recreate if they get lost. Also the files I had in Leo didn't seem to save to my iTunes backup so when I updated to iOS 8 they were gone.😔
LIKE SUPERIMPOSE WITH LAYERS! (by johndoegrayson641 on Wed, 17 Sep 2014 02:04:00)
I love it! It gets the job done when you cannot edit on your computer. I use this app everyday, and I would recommend it to many editors out there. Like I said I love it, but IT KEEPS QUITTING ON ME SINCE THE LAST UPDATE SEPTEMBER 16, 2014, PLEASE FIX!
There's a huge problem (by Horrible reviews on Sun, 14 Sep 2014 17:38:00)
Cuz everytime whenhi I edit it starts glitc
Awesome app! 1 Problem. (by Epicasian23 on Sat, 13 Sep 2014 18:41:00)
The app is like mobile photoshop, but there's 1 problem for me. When you save, the quality is lowered to a maximum of 2048. Please fix! I make designs that are 2880x1800.
Love the options (by Sylvester4 on Thu, 04 Sep 2014 00:29:00)
This will be replacing several other Apps I now tinker with to get a final desired image.
Brilliant (by dxp97 on Thu, 28 Aug 2014 04:14:00)
I recently wrote a review about "Superimpose," another one of your apps. This is the 100x better version of that. By far the best picture editor on the App Store. Totally worth $4.99
Needs AUTOLOADER (by Shaun32 on Sun, 24 Aug 2014 11:52:00)
Perfect app to mirror desktop image editing, but I would love an autoload for workflow so I can work quickly without switching screens.
like photoshop in the palm of your hand (by bgregoryk on Tue, 12 Aug 2014 00:47:00)
just a great app for layering...thank you keep up the good work
Great App But... (by Best App But... on Mon, 11 Aug 2014 19:20:00)
Its a great app, but for me when ever I load an image, the quality of the pic goes down A LOT. Please someone help me!!!
Leonardo - ALL YOU NEED!! (by Battttchh on Sat, 02 Aug 2014 11:12:00)
This app, beats ANY other photo editing app by far! Well worth $4.99! I currently use anywhere between 4-5 different apps on average to edit on my iPhone & iPad as there really aren't any apps out there that offer all that I need. I've only owned this app for about an hour and just messed around with all of the features but am confident that once I get comfortable with it, I'll be able to delete all of my others and use this one only! Great work - A MUST OWN!
Wow!!!! The Best Photo Editor! (by kaphinga on Thu, 31 Jul 2014 02:55:00)
This is simply the most significant photo app to come out in a long time. Multiple layers, blend modes, and just about any image adjustment you can imagine .... It's all here. And it is all wrapped up in a beautiful interface! There are several other good editors, but they are all missing something -- either layers or masks or an intuitive interface. Leonardo has blown them all away. If you are serious about editing photos, you need this app.
My favorite app at the moment (by rinjo on Sun, 20 Jul 2014 17:29:00)
It took me a while to understand what all this app can do, but now that i can use it, i couldn't be without it. If you like to use layers an edit your pic's, that would be your program.
Works great, but... (by EPJS on Fri, 04 Jul 2014 20:07:00)
When I saved an image with a transparent background as PNG, it saved with a solid background color. Other than that, this is a great app that does the job well.
Great functionality. (by jczimm on Sun, 29 Jun 2014 11:41:00)
This app has so much functionally, from layers to customizable filters to adjustable curves. This app is unlike any other photo editing app I’ve seen.
By far, the best photo editing app. (by Jessie Adair on Tue, 03 Jun 2014 09:34:00)
Hardly a day goes by that I do not use the powerful editing features of Leonardo to transform all kinds of photos from ordinary to extraordinary. There was a bit of a learning curve in the beginning, but the investment in time I made to explore the many features has paid big dividends in results. I continue to discover faster and easier ways to do various things as well as find new ways to use existing tool. With Leonardo, I have more than gotten my money's worth.
BEST APP EVER!! (by Maggiefilms on Wed, 21 May 2014 00:21:00)
Love it and use it for my instagram, @wallfl0werss!! ❤️
Love this app (by Danielle d lolley on Tue, 20 May 2014 13:10:00)
At first I wasn't to sure about this app, but the more I played with it the more I liked it. I was thinking about buying photoshop touch, but the reviews are bad on photoshop. Then I found this app and it was cheaper and does way more than I thought it would do. I wanted a app to make collages, blends and a app that I could add my own textures in and this app lets me do it all on my iPad. I love the tools filters and textures that it also comes with. I would love to see a brush eraser in the feature, but for now the mask tools works wounderful. I'm happy with this purchase. It has crashed one time, but it saved my work and I read photoshop touch crashes a lot and you lose your work. I was happy to see my work was saved when the app crashed and I could pick up where I left off. This is a good editing app. Users looking to buy photoshop touch, give this app a try first. It dose it all and it's half the price.
good editing app (by jpnleigh on Sat, 17 May 2014 15:03:00)
I've used superimpose for a while now, and I wanted to try this out. very similar, and I'm glad it supports multiple layers. I wish it had the eraser like superimpose has.
Best app ever (by Emmathecoolswagyologirljk on Sun, 06 Apr 2014 16:25:00)
I used to think superimpose was so cool but thhis clearly is like the best app in the world😂thank you for making this app
Whoa! (by DannyD01 on Tue, 11 Mar 2014 18:38:00)
Nothing else even comes remotely close. I'd give it six stars if I could!
Functional and intuitive (by Edwinepp on Mon, 03 Mar 2014 12:55:00)
This is my go to app for layers and masking. Enough said
Awesome (by Opnmind on Tue, 25 Feb 2014 16:00:00)
What a great app! Love it!
Best photo editor (by Mikeraboy on Sat, 22 Feb 2014 21:55:00)
I love this app. It is my go to photo editing app. I prefer it to PS Touch Snapseed and Filterstorm
FIX AUTO-FEATHERING (by Puffcloud on Fri, 14 Feb 2014 21:08:00)
This app is really handy is as close as photoshop as you can get with an app. However, the auto feathering can not be fixed I settings and makes all of your photos soft at the edges. It may seem nice, but it basically messes up the entire photo, for that reason, I've been using Juxtaposer instead.
unrivaled for basic editing and layer operations (by Naviculus on Mon, 03 Feb 2014 09:30:00)
This is a really wonderful tool to deal with layers and layering operations. The basic technical photo manipulation options are very comprehensive, so this is my primary go-to editor for the basics such as color, levels, contrast, etc. Kudos for the real-time feedback on the sliders. This is like Snapseed but with far more options for masking and layering. Simply the best in this department. The only downside to this app is the fx section. I just find most of them not useful at all. No HDR effects, no grunge, no colorsplash..on and on. There are (for me) much more interesting fx in many many other apps. At least bring back the dreamy fx from the predecessor of this app (photowizard). I don't know why that one wasn't carried over. Otherwise, great app. Please add some more interesting effects.
A full-featured, professional photo editing application! (by raksphoto on Sun, 02 Feb 2014 03:51:00)
I've searched and searched looking for a photo editor app having "full power." Leonardo is that app. The ability to use layers, have layer masks, but more particularly to allow intelligent and clean mask selections -- that matters a lot in a touch-oriented environment. The video demos give you a jump start on the efficient and clean GUI. And of course it has important professional photography functions like the ability to edit the EXIF and other metadata. Your work is saved in the app like a project -- one could say similarly to a PSD file, and you can in fact export PSD. Since you can select layers, one Leonardo application can export several JPEG or PNG renderings, depending on what is selected. A truly incredible app.
Leonardo has the title of being the most-Photoshop-like app. (by An_Apple_user on Fri, 09 Aug 2013 19:17:00)
Leonardo is a very good and impressive effort at a Photoshop clone for iPhone. I've bought many apps (including Adobe's own apps) that claim to do what Photoshop can do and none of them do. The [non-available] Photoforge2 app was the best one so far then but now Leonardo has the title of being the most-Photoshop-like app. Since this is a new app, it is missing a few critical items and some features need further adjustments, but I'm sure they'll be ironed out since the developer was receptive to my feedbacks. His words: "All these feedbacks from real users are keeping me busy and happy. Looking forward to provide a better experience with Leonardo in the upcoming updates." All in all, Leonardo is an excellent start at being a full blown professional photo editing app for iPhone.
Bad PSD resolution (by SpiritmanDave on Fri, 09 Aug 2013 18:21:00)
After emailing JPG and PSD files to myself and opening in Photoshop to check resolution I was surprised to find the resolution of the 2 layer PSD file to be considerably lower than the jpg although the file size was 7mg vs 1.7mg. This app has a fantastic interface and is an unbelievably great replica of Photoshop only to be crippled by its resolution shortcoming. Kudos to its designers! When you improve the res issue your gonna get 5 stars, well deserved!
Leonardo - Photo Editor with Layer, Selection and Mask Review from 51th to 100th
Wow!!!! All this and 8+ MP Resolution (by kaphinga on Fri, 09 Aug 2013 15:47:00)
This is simply the most significant photo app to come out in a long time. Multiple layers, blend modes, and just about any image adjustment you can imagine .... It's all here. And it is all wrapped up in a beautiful interface! If you are serious about editing photos, you need this app. Leonardo can save at 8MP resolution on most devices. I have tested it on an iPhone 5' an iPad 4 and an iPad 2. You have to go into Settings (the '?' Icon on the home screen) and set it to High Resolution. On the iPad 4, the app supports better than 13MP resolution. For those who complain that high resolution is not full resolution, please note that Photoshop Touch caps the resolution at 12 MP, 1 MP lower than Leonardo on current hardware, and limits you to three layers. Leonardo allows 13.5 MP, and I was able to create a document with 15+ layers at that resolution. (I got bored and gave up after 15 layers; I still don't know what the layer limit is.) So ... I can name very few apps that are truly full resolution, and most certainly Photoshop Touch is not among them. (Not that I am knocking PS Touch; I actually like it very much for certain things.) Snapseed, Filterstorm and Photogene are the only three apps I know that can handle, for example, a 20 MP file. Anyhow, I am tired of nitpicking over pixels. I would rather be doing creative things with my 8 MP iPhone images ... And Leonardo allows me to do that just fine.
Impressive set of editing tools (by gillettd on Thu, 08 Aug 2013 23:21:00)
By far the best photo editing app on IOS. The layering tool is intuitive. Masking took a bit longer to learn but very controllable. So many ways to combine layers and images. Who needs photoshop. Or you can save to psd layers and keep editing. Way too cheap, get it now.
Love it, love it, love it (by Picnicmetoo on Thu, 08 Aug 2013 23:05:00)
Its what I've been waiting for for the Ipad since Ipad 1. I have Ipad 3, IOS 6.1.3. 3G/LTE. I'm a longtime user of PS and LR and this is the closest for mobile I've tried (and I have all the better apps). What can I say--masks, layers, filter, selection....saving in jpeg, psd or png. So far no issues and I've put it thru the mill today. I have a custom PC for photo processing for RAW but for uploads to Flickr or Pbase this is just terrific. I use an Adonit Jot for selections which works great with app for selections, masking. I'm a happy camper to say the least. Highly recommended.
Great app and tutorials (by DebbieF49 on Thu, 08 Aug 2013 19:04:00)
This app is terrific and easy, intuitive to use. But if you are not experienced with digital photo editing it might be even more valuable as a learning tool. The written and video tutorials are well done.
Most impressive photo editing app I've seen on iOS (by Passepartout on Thu, 08 Aug 2013 03:57:00)
The UI is a little inobvious, and the use of Times italic in the UI is puzzling, but this is a very solid application with a large subset of Photoshop color adjustments, filters, and FX ready to hand including curves, levels, masking, exposure adjustment, lots of sharpening and noise tools, and all of it very fast and interactive.
Mrjay22 (by Mrj22 on Thu, 08 Aug 2013 02:34:00)
Just watched a few of the videos and I'm Blown away. Photoshop on steroids on my iPhone!
Dissappointing Resolution on iPad2 (by Techno-nut on Wed, 07 Aug 2013 21:40:00)
Considering the full resolution capabilities of the this developer's flagship photo apps, I was very disappointed to find my 12.1mp images saved to a mediocre resolution of 1725x2592 or 4.5mp. I saw the note aabout the iPhone4 res, but really, that means nothing to other idevice owners. As for PSD export, you have to use iTunes or e-mail the file; what a cludge. Why not a link to DropBox or some other more elegant solution, like "Open In...". In order to evaluate the PSD version, I e-mailed to my self, the PSD save of the same 12mp file saved to a JPG above, and then imported back into PSD Viewer on my iPad2 and it reports the image dimensions at 681x1024. Things are getting worse. I just read a review that said the iPad exports PSD at 4096x4096. Maybe the 3rd Gen version, but not the iPad2. Like most of the features borrowed from my personal favorite Photo Wizard app, they work fairly well. I am having some difficulty with some of the tools, e.g., clone stamp, etc., but I'll figure it out even if I have to watch the tuts. I am so dissapointed in the resolution, I am not sure whether the other layer features make up for it. I'll keep it around for a while, in hopes that the developer can improve upon the resolution.
Wow! (by N-girl on Wed, 07 Aug 2013 17:42:00)
Extremely powerful app with terrible, terrible typography on iPhone.
Still learning (by Verucas1 on Tue, 06 Aug 2013 21:30:00)
Still learning but so far so good!
No full resolution support 👎 (by -FallenAngel- on Tue, 06 Aug 2013 14:32:00)
I agree with Techno-nut, this app does not save images in full resolution (high res doesn't mean FULL res), deleted! Get Photoshop touch instead.
Needs full res option (by luna noire on Tue, 06 Aug 2013 14:02:00)
Very nice photo editing app with a ton of features and options. Much more user friendly than Laminar and Photoshop Touch. Ease of layering, applying effects, are great. Especially like the slider to control effects. Excellent work on creating this full featured photo editing app. This along with Snapseed, are the only ones I will need for immediate post-processing before I bring an image into another app. Two things I'd really like to see: Higher quality scans of the grunge border overlays. As is right now they are soft and blurred and unusable as is. They need to be higher res as they export extremely pixelated. Full res option. As others have noted, very high res is not full res,at least on my ipad 3 and iPhone 4S. Other than that so far, I am still experimenting with this app and like what it offers. Great deal at $2.
Very powerful editing app (by Alan.AZ on Sat, 03 Aug 2013 22:22:00)
I own and use quite a few high-end editing apps, but Leonardo is quickly becoming my favorite. Seems as if the developer has taken all the goodness of SuperImpose and PhotoWizard and combined it into this one comprehensive app. If you need selection and layering capability along with a "swiss army knife" of editors, then click buy now!
Awesome editing app! Karen L Messick (by KLM1307 on Sat, 03 Aug 2013 13:45:00)
Another wonderful processing app from the developer of SuperImpose and PhotoWizard. Quite possibly the best one yet for image editing on the iPhone!!
So well done! (by CarolynHallYoung on Fri, 02 Aug 2013 20:20:00)
This app, Leonardo, deserves its name. It is powerful, very flexible," and stunningly – very clear to use. Bravo for Leonardo! Thank you very much.
